“Mastersizer 3000 in Mandarin?”

Climbing into a Shanghai taxi (for another white knuckle ride!), clutching my hotel address carefully written down in Chinese characters, I mused yet again on how much easier my, now regular, trips to China would be if only I’d learned Mandarin at school instead of the traditional French, German, Spanish and Latin I studied in the UK. It’s certainly something I’ll be encouraging my children to explore.
I’m here in Shanghai, together with colleagues from Malvern Instruments China, to participate in a number of interviews (my contribution requiring an interpreter of …

Mine’s a Guinness!

With the launch of the new Mastersizer 3000 2 weeks ago, we’ve been working hard to allow people to see it in the flesh. A trip to the Emerald Isle therefore provided an excellent opportunity for the first European outing for the system. So, a group of us headed off the Dubin last week, home of Guinness and the world-famous Irish welcome. The Croke Park venue in Dublin selected by Malvern’s long-time distributor, Particular Sciences, made the event even more special for those who attended.
A big venue for a system …

Size up the new Mastersizer 3000! Download the brochure now

Now the Mastersizer 3000 product brochure is available for download, you can discover why I have been like Lewis Carole’s Cheshire Cat these past few weeks – sometimes difficult to find, but always with a smile on my face!
Ready to stand next to the phenomenally successful Mastersizer 2000, not only is the new Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle characterization system sleek, shiny and dressed in style, this new addition to our product portfolio has almost futuristic measurement capabilities too. A smart package all in!
The laser diffraction particle characterization system you …

Tales from the development team: Agile is all!

Just to round up ‘Tales from the development team’ I’m Andy Prior, Divisional Project Manager at Malvern and I’ve been responsible for overseeing the development of the new Mastersizer 3000. First and foremost I’d like to thank the whole team and everyone who has had a hand in bringing the system to market. I believe we have a laser diffraction product to be proud of and early users certainly seem to agree.
In the beginning
On day one, my first job was to put together the overall development  team for this project and then …

Tales from the development team: A smooth operator…

As Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Mastersizer 3000 development team, one of the innovations that pleases me most is the instrument’s new automatic cell locking mechanism. And it’s certainly something that many people comment on when they first use the Mastersizer 3000.

If you’re familiar with the way the machinery takes over as you start to insert a DVD into your computer – automatically pulling it into the player – then you immediately have an idea of the mechanism engineered into the Mastersizer 3000. Why did we include it? Because we …

Tales from the development team: The art of accessorizing

As Project Manager Accessories/ Manufacturing Engineering Manager, I have been responsible for optimizing all the Mastersizer 3000 accessories, which includes the Hydro range of wet dispersion units and the revolutionary new Aero S dry dispersion system.

Having worked on the Mastersizer 2000 range I can really appreciate the design ingenuity and engineering expertise that has gone into creating the accessories range for the new Mastersizer 3000, not least because the team has succeeded in reducing the size of each one to around a quarter of the size of the Mastersizer 2000 units.

Innovation …

Tales from the development team: Designing a supermachine that can be driven by all

As Malvern Instruments System Engineer responsible for the design of the new Aero S - the dry dispersion unit that helps the new Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle sizing system stand apart from others in its dry powder measurement range (100 nm to 3.5 mm), application flexibility, result robustness and simple beauty – I must hereby thank the entire development team for their invaluable support!

Our aim was to deliver style, grace and unbeatable performance in a system that required as little operational input as possible. To provide an air pressure with …

Tales from the development team: Pumping power into wet dispersion

As a Systems Engineer at Malvern Instruments I have had the pleasure of developing the wet dispersion units for our Mastersizer 3000. So, when asked what I like most about the Mastersizer 3000 my initial thoughts tend to revolve around the new Hydro family of wet dispersion solutions. However, the Mastersizer 3000 is so impressive as a whole system that it makes me proud to be able to claim to be a part of the team responsible for bringing it to market.
As we all know, materials analysis is not about …

Tales from the development team: Designing the Mastersizer 3000 optical core

Hello! I am Malvern Instruments’ Systems Engineer Optics. Together with a highly skilled team of colleagues I am responsible for the design of the optical bench that lies at the heart of the new Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle size analyzer.
There are so many aspects of the Mastersizer 3000 optics that are worth talking about, but I think that of most interest will be our overall approach to the design challenge.
The design challenge
The challenge when designing the optical bench for the new Mastersizer 3000 was how to pack a Mastersizer …
