What would the polymer chemist do?

To someone who works on measurements of both polymers and proteins with the Viscotek and Zetasizer instruments, the similarities between the two samples are very clear. Both are made from repeating monomeric units and the function of both is highly dependent on their molecular weight, size and structure. In polymers, the repeating unit is typically a single monomer or co-monomer whereas in proteins the repeating units are amino acids, of which there are about 20 that can be joined in any sequence and this, of course, is one of the …

Unravelling the secrets of the web with rheology

Customer contact is always something that is maintained here at Malvern – with our Customer Support and Technical and Application teams available to ensure our users are able to get the most out of their instruments. Since many of our users are in universities, one particularly interesting aspect for me is being able to keep up to date with the latest research developments that Malvern systems are being used for.
It was a pleasure to be able to catch up again recently with members of the Oxford Silk Group, to hear about …

Mastersizer 3000 on the road again : UK Seminars

One of the more enjoyable aspects of my job is getting out and about and meeting our customers in the flesh. The Malvern UK seminars are the perfect opportunity to do this, and I was glad to be asked to give a presentation on “Trends in instrumentation for particle characterization” at our two events in the south of the UK this week held at the Celtic Manor in Wales ( apparently a prestigious golfing venue for those that enjoy the game) and Ascot Racecourse.
Both events were extremely well attended with …

Having being heavily involved in the global launch of of our Mastersizer 3000 instrument last year, I had my first memorable visit to our headquarters in Shanghai where we trained our applications and sales teams in preparation for the launch. Therefore I was extremely pleased to hear from our Chinese team that the Mastersizer 3000 has been awarded “Best New Instrument of the Year 2011″ by the Annual Conference of China Scientific Instruments 2012 (ACCSI 2012) on 23rd March 2012 in Beijing.

Global demands of the pharmaceutical market

I was recently asked to provide my opinion regarding global instrument markets for a round robin piece for the March issue of Drug Development & Delivery.
Sometimes you question the merit of these activities; however this one was a subject close to my heart, looking at analytical instrument investment with a particular focus on the Pharmaceutical sector.
The special feature has now been published and is well worth a read. It is titled: ‘Analytical Instruments: Global Demands, Innovations & Cost Savings’
Excerpt:
“There is a global demand for analytical instruments, and industry players are …

Customer appreciation at the House of Blues, Pittcon 2012

Pittcon – don’tcha love it? And this year’s Pittcon was no exception.
Held again in Orlando after a year in Atlanta, Pittcon 2012 was an opportunity to cruise International Drive and enjoy the benefits of Mears shuttle buses (whine, whine), where the topic of packing density appears shortly and spontaneously after arrival at the airport….
Technical trials
Well it’s at events like this that technical thoughts leap to the forefront of my over-worked neuron. Fueled on a diet of technical presentations, posters, short courses, and the invariably enormous exhibition with huge numbers of …
