If you type into Google or Google Earth “1 smoot in meters” you’ll be able to work out that 1 nanosmoot (nSm) is around 1.7nm, but more of that later….
If you take a look at the one of the first British standards (as I have done….I even have a copy….sad case that I am…), you’ll find a couple of really interesting things.
Interesting to me, that is… And it’s all about bridges – not Lloyd…
“Properties of British Standard Sections” was published in July 1904 and then cost the princely sum of …

In anticipation of the start of Euro 2012, thoughts probably turn more to the upcoming festival of football (or soccer depending on your whereabouts) – and maybe the odd beer to celebrate or commiserate match results – as opposed to materials characterization that we here at Malvern are involved in daily.
But the two are inextricably linked, as revealed by developments that have led to the new tournament football in use at Euro 2012, where advances in polyurethane dispersion and resin technology are at the forefront.
Such materials are familiar to us …

The Olympic Torch Relay passed through Malvern this morning on its epic 8000 mile journey around the UK to the Olympic Stadium in London. Our local council have been working hard with a range of people and organisations to ensure that we all remember Friday 25th May. Excitement has travelled with the Torch since the relay began last Saturday as record numbers of spectators turn out the see the flame travel through their home town.
So what of the actual relay well I don’t know if it was my vantage point …

With the recent opening of our new facility in Houston, the total effort going into our separations products is continuing to grow. The large applications laboratory and training facilities are great for new and existing customers to see and the first customer training course that took place a couple of weeks ago was very well received. At the same time, the manufacturing and development facilities have been greatly increased to support the growing demand for the Viscotek GPC/SEC products now and in the years to come.
As part of the growth …

Touch anything metal that has been in the sun, and you had a lasting red burn mark
Ice cream served at the break without any spoons? Just take it outside and you could drink it within 10 minutes.
Temperatures are 104-107F, or 40C to those from outside the US. Serious heat. What it feels like when you take a peek inside the oven while cooking, and that painful blast of hot air blows across your face.
So the positive side of this is folks didn’t wander to the pool or nature trails during …

Hello there. I’m Eric Gilvray, an Applications Technologist here at Malvern specialising in Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). My job involves the day to day analysis of polymers in order to showcase what exactly Malvern Instrumentation can tell us about a customer’s sample. The variation of samples we receive at Malvern is staggering, with the same polymer very rarely being analysed twice, which keeps the job exciting and challenging.
I find myself working with plastics everyday whether it is on a sample analysis at Malvern, or on the weekend in a nightclub …

My role as Product Technical Specialist for the range of rheology products at Malvern takes me all across the globe supporting our customers, and I’ve just come to the end of a ‘rheology tour’ of all the states in Australia… it’s definitely a big country! I’d particularly like thank all the representatives from our local distributor, ATA Scientific, for helping out at each of the seminars.
Part of our seminars down under were focused on promoting the advantages of rheology, and judging by the number of viscometer users attending our talks, …

Hi again, I have just returned from a whistle stop tour of the UK with my Morphologi. It is great to meet users and potential users of the system and discuss their applications and ideas.
I started off at the UK seminars which over a two week period took place at the Celtic Manor at Newport, Ascot race course, Stirling management centre and Bradford. I gave live demonstrations of the Morphologi alongside the demonstrations of the Mastersizer 3000.
The audience got to see how we can disperse and measure dry powders and …

Today, a set of Mastersizer 3000’s complete with accessories and tools left the company to start its journey to the Malvern office in Kobe, Japan. In a few days’ time my colleague and I will fly off to meet this shipment in order to start the next round of engineer service training. This will be our second two-week spell of Mastersizer 3000 training in the Far East as only a few months ago we were in Shanghai providing introductory training on the same instruments. Our plan this time is to …
