Having managed X-ray diffraction labs at previous jobs and in grad school, we know that there are a number of factors to consider when the time comes to add or replace an X-ray diffraction (XRD) system in your lab. Benchtop XRD systems may be a compact and cost-effective alternative to floor standing systems. Deciding which factors are key requirements for your needs will help you select a Benchtop system ideal for your situation.
1. Determine what level of performance is acceptable for your application
One of the key aspects of system performance …

As communicated last year, as of 1 January 2017 Malvern Instruments and PANalytical have merged their activities. Both companies are owned by parent company Spectris plc and are world leading suppliers of analytical instrumentation, PANalytical for X-ray instrumentation and software for the purpose of materials analysis, and Malvern Instruments for materials and biophysical characterization technology.
PANalytical’s main technologies are X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) which provide elemental and structural information on a range of materials across different industry segments and application areas. One such application is solving and understanding crystal structure in crystalline …

A group of Malvern & PANalytical employees/adventurers (& friends) recently embarked on a trek in scenic Snowdonia. “Who were they?”, you might ask…
Bound together by a love of beautiful scenery, good walks, and Jenny’s amazing soup, we braved the perfect conditions to get to the top! But the adventure was not without challenge. And getting together became harder when the rendezvous parking area turned out to be full. We had to find each other despite our phones receiving barely any signal, and no landmarks by which to orient ourselves. The most …

Pittcon 2017, as it has in previous years, provided us with an excellent opportunity to meet with current and prospective customers to discuss their application challenges and introduce them to some of our technologies.
The Malvern team spent the week engaged with customers, both in the short courses we offered as well as at our booth, discussing applications and characterization challenges.

For many visitors, Pittcon provided their first opportunity to see certain Malvern instruments in person. There was significant interest at the booth for our Mastersizer 3000, OMNISEC, NanoSight, and Zetasizer, and overall …

The Pharmaceutical Analysis of Powders – Particle Size Determination seminar is to be held March 1st at Bella Sky in Copenhagen and is co-organized by Malvern Instruments and Particle Analytical.
If you are working with products manufactured from powdered solids in the pharmaceutical industry, this might be the course for you.
The most important physical property of particulate samples is particle size – this has a direct influence on material properties such as reactivity, dissolution rate, stability, flowability and handling. Therefore, particle size distribution should be known, and also controlled. Ultimately this helps to …

It’s lovely to work in the Malvern Instruments Headquarter at this time of year.  Our usually functional but slightly dull open plan offices are festooned with festive decorations, as each team and department tries to out-do the rest with the flashiest and gaudiest display possible. Of all the departments at Malvern, NPI (New Product Introduction) has really gone to town this year.  Maybe that’s because they have a secret weapon…. snazzy 3D printed, all singing, all dancing, exclusively designed decorations.
For the second year running, Rowena Innocent, Engineering Director, had organised a friendly competition to …

GREAT TO MEET YOU!
What really matters? Building relationships

From the point of view of an exhibitor, exhibitions often mean long days, lots of coffee and sometimes blistered feet if you happen to be wearing the wrong shoes.  Despite this, they are mostly enjoyable and rewarding experiences, providing lots of opportunity for us to talk with our customers and help them with their measurement needs. Exhibitions are an ideal platform for meeting people, forging relationships and sharing a few beers.

But, what happens after the exhibition when everybody …
