Downstream in-line monitoring for better processes and products
Every second is critical towards rectifying a plant upset or ensuring efficient plant management. What if you could incorporate in-line analysis for your dry and liquid products?
Companies that introduced in-line particle size analysis at the milling stage noticed significantly less over-milling. Hence seeing as much as a 2% increase in plant throughput. In-line elemental analysis allows petrochemical companies to closely monitor Fe, Ni, V which destroy expensive catalysts.
Why incorporate in-line analysis?

Real-time monitoring of your batches
Make immediate corrections to poor batches
Prevent wastage
Improve your manufacturing …

To support the growing interest in Malvern PANalytical technologies for use in the food and drink industry, we held a joint free seminar devoted to this extremely important industry sector. This took place on Wednesday, June 8th in the Marriott Hotel Schaumburg, Chicago and saw more than 20 enthusiastic attendees from the food industry attend for an applications-focused set of presentations stressing the importance of Malvern PANalytical’s  complementary analytical techniques and the value they add to this sector.  We kicked off with a ‘Deluxe Continental Breakfast’ as befitting the attendees.

Personally, I must say that this was …

With Pre-Conference Workshop on Biophysical Characterization and Particle Analysis

Date: July 17th – 20th.
We at Malvern know that protein stability is important in numerous disciplines, ranging from basic and medical biochemistry to pharmaceutical sciences. However, it is rare that researchers from all the relevant areas can join to discuss the critical issues in the field. The 2017 Colorado Protein Stability Conference provides a unique forum for this exchange of information. The topics to be covered include protein folding, dynamics and thermodynamic stability; amyloidosis and protein aggregation; and stability, formulation, analysis and processing …

This week is the Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC) held in beautiful Copenhagen. It has been a great conference so far with the opening reception at the City Hall – what an impressive building.

Malvern had a talk on Tuesday with our very own Nordic Rheology Specialist, Mats Larsson, talking about how “Creep testing can be used as an alternative to multi wave oscillation for determining the true gel point of network polymers“.
The session was appropriately chaired by Professor Henning Winter who along with Francois Chambon set out the criterion for …

The NEW MicroCal PEAQ-DSC – the gold standard for thermal stability determination
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is an established biophysical tool for protein stability characterization during drug development. DSC data are used to advance the most stable and ‘developable’ proteins into the pipeline, and optimize the process and formulation conditions which will maintain protein stability during manufacturing and storage. DSC data are also important in higher order structure (HOS) protein characterization, lot-to-lot comparability, and characterization of biosimilar drugs compared to innovators.
Our previous technology, the MicroCal VP-Capillary DSC Automated system, is a …

My introduction to Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was a postdoctoral fellow in the late 1980s.  I was producing mutant forms of the enzyme thymidylate synthase, and I needed to characterize the effects amino acid changes had on the overall stability of the protein.  Using a DSC instrument at our facility, I compared the thermal stability of the different mutants to wild-type protein by ranking the thermal transition temperature (TM). As I recall, I needed about 2 mg -4 mg protein per DSC experiment, which was a lot of protein at …

Last year we asked you to tell us about your most interesting or challenging Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) / Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) sample and why it presented such a challenge. For instance, if you’ve made two polymers which should be different but you can’t tell apart; or have polymers that are so small you don’t have the sensitivity to measure accurately.
The top 3 submissions that presented the biggest challenge to our new OMNISEC advanced GPC/SEC system would be awarded with a full sample analysis along with a prize of …
