Malvern Events, Meet the Experts »

[20 Mar 2017 | ]

Pittcon 2017, as it has in previous years, provided us with an excellent opportunity to meet with current and prospective customers to discuss their application challenges and introduce them to some of our technologies.
The Malvern team spent the week engaged with customers, both in the short courses we offered as well as at our booth, discussing applications and characterization challenges.

For many visitors, Pittcon provided their first opportunity to see certain Malvern instruments in person. There was significant interest at the booth for our Mastersizer 3000, OMNISEC, NanoSight, and Zetasizer, and overall …

The NEW MicroCal PEAQ-DSC – the gold standard for thermal stability determination
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is an established biophysical tool for protein stability characterization during drug development. DSC data are used to advance the most stable and ‘developable’ proteins into the pipeline, and optimize the process and formulation conditions which will maintain protein stability during manufacturing and storage. DSC data are also important in higher order structure (HOS) protein characterization, lot-to-lot comparability, and characterization of biosimilar drugs compared to innovators.
Our previous technology, the MicroCal VP-Capillary DSC Automated system, is a …

My introduction to Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was a postdoctoral fellow in the late 1980s.  I was producing mutant forms of the enzyme thymidylate synthase, and I needed to characterize the effects amino acid changes had on the overall stability of the protein.  Using a DSC instrument at our facility, I compared the thermal stability of the different mutants to wild-type protein by ranking the thermal transition temperature (TM). As I recall, I needed about 2 mg -4 mg protein per DSC experiment, which was a lot of protein at …

Last year we asked you to tell us about your most interesting or challenging Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) / Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) sample and why it presented such a challenge. For instance, if you’ve made two polymers which should be different but you can’t tell apart; or have polymers that are so small you don’t have the sensitivity to measure accurately.
The top 3 submissions that presented the biggest challenge to our new OMNISEC advanced GPC/SEC system would be awarded with a full sample analysis along with a prize of …

DSC for the regulated environment

Advancing biotherapeutic molecules along the drug development pipeline is a complex, time-consuming and expensive process. Good stability is key to a candidate’s progression, and must be assessed and reviewed throughout development – from candidate selection, through formulation development, all the way to batch-to-batch comparability or biosimilarity assessment….and beyond! Objective, reliable stability data is needed for confident decision-making about which drug products and processes to move through development into commercialization.
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a biophysical tool for protein stability characterization. The MicroCal VP-Capillary DSC system, launched in 2002, …

The Pharmaceutical Analysis of Powders – Particle Size Determination seminar is to be held March 1st at Bella Sky in Copenhagen and is co-organized by Malvern Instruments and Particle Analytical.
If you are working with products manufactured from powdered solids in the pharmaceutical industry, this might be the course for you.
The most important physical property of particulate samples is particle size – this has a direct influence on material properties such as reactivity, dissolution rate, stability, flowability and handling. Therefore, particle size distribution should be known, and also controlled. Ultimately this helps to …

I always enjoy meeting our Malvern customers whenever I travel to different sites and events. I have been assisting customers with MicroCal ITC (Isothermal Titration Calorimetry) and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) instruments for over 15 years, and there are customers I have known since 2001. Every time I think I “know it all” I always learn something new from our customers, such as a unique sample analyzed using our instruments, or a “trick” for sample preparation or data analysis.
Malvern Instruments recently hosted two MicroCal “User Days” in San Diego, CA …

When it comes to maintaining a stable water treatment operation, the right coagulant dose is critical for efficient flocculation. Traditional methods for setting this parameter are imprecise and labor intensive, and as a result, over- and under-dosing is common and response to process changes is reactive at best.
At the American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) Water Quality Technical Conference (WQTC) in Indianapolis, on November 13-15, Malvern will be showcasing its Zetasizer WT which helps water treatment plants better manage coagulation control.
The Malvern Zetasizer WT provides unique benefits unavailable by other methods:

Fully automated …

October 31st 2016 was a fun and frightful fall day at Malvern Americas headquarters in Westborough, MA. While working hard is very important at Malvern, we also like to take some time out and enjoy Hallowe’en. A number of staff dressed up – we had Harley Quinn, a clown, and even an elephant join the festivities!

In addition to the costume competition, we also hosted a cooking/baking contest featuring pumpkins, and a pumpkin decorating contest! Everyone was able to enjoy the delicious food brought in, and view the beautiful pumpkin artwork. …

Thermodynamics – Recap of the 30th Annual Gibbs Conference on Biothermodynamics
ΔG = ΔH – TΔS

Many scientists will recognize this equation, relating the enthalpy and entropy change of a reaction to ΔG or “Gibbs energy.”  But do you know anything about the man behind this expression of energy?
Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839 –1903), spent most of his life in New Haven, Connecticut. His work on the applications of thermodynamics was instrumental in transforming physical chemistry into a rigorous deductive science. Together with James Clerk Maxwell and Ludwig Boltzmann, he created statistical mechanics (a term that Gibbs coined), explaining the laws of thermodynamics as consequences of the …

Best practices for characterizing and manufacturing battery slurries and electrodes
The market for batteries is rapidly growing, and the increased demand for portable electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops requires greater advances in battery technology in order to provide a light weight, long lasting and stable power source. Battery technology is also being pushed further in electric vehicle applications, which require even more lightweight, higher power and faster charging batteries.

Critical for the development and production of a battery is getting the right material composition and putting it together in such …
