ASD

The use of VNIR (visible-near-infrared) optical spectroscopy allows real-time measurement of materials in the field, in the lab, near-line, and on-line. ASD, a brand of Malvern Panalytical, offers a range of such optical spectroscopy instruments that are portable, rugged, research-grade, non-invasive and non-destructive, require little to no sample preparation, and enable rapid and cost-effective real-time measurement of data.

I am one of the founders of ASD, a brand of Malvern Panalytical, and I currently serve as Chief Technical Officer.
With their shallow root systems, potatoes are highly susceptible to both drought and heat. Drought reduces both the amount of foliage as well as inducing early leaf senescence. Similarly, heat stress also results in early leaf senescence. Since foliar abundance and function directly impact tuber formation and growth, drought and heat stress negatively impact yields.
Cultivation of potatoes is increasing in regions of the world with climates less conducive to potato …

Geologists use Malvern Panalytical’s ASD spectrometers, such as the TerraSpec® Halo and the TerraSpec 4, to help define alteration halos around hydrothermal ore bodies. By using the TerraSpec to differentiate subtle shifts in mineralogies, geologists can identify alteration halos and map zones of advanced argillic, propylitic and potassic alteration such as at the Los Andes, Nicaragua project described below. This helps the geologist better understand the resource and focus drilling programs to optimize exploration time and costs.
Register to attend our free webinar, “TerraSpec® Halo Best Practices, Tips & Tricks,” on 26 April …

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a fast, non-destructive technique that measures light reflectance to determine various materials or identify compounds. NIR is widely applied and is used to measure food quality, validate pharmaceutical constituents, research climate change effects, identify counterfeit products, monitor agricultural crops, identify and even quantify mined minerals, just to give a few examples.
In mining, Malvern Panalytical’s ASD TerraSpec® line of spectrometers are used by leading mining corporations in mines around the world to help them vector in on their deposits faster as well as characterize the geology and …

90% of the United States began the year of 2018 with freezing temperatures.
The Northeast has recently experienced a massive winter snowstorm, referred to as a “bomb cyclone“. Record cold temperatures, not felt since 1884, are being experienced in Boston. Beyond New England, a majority of the rest of the country is also being affected by the brutal cold; this includes Texas, Georgia, and Florida, even.
Why is this happening? And, why is this happening now? Could it have something to do with climate change?
Dr. Ulyana “Uly” Horodyskyj uses ASD’s FieldSpec HandHeld …

In the realm of earth observation and as satellite imagery and remote sensing become more popular, it can still be confusing to determine how to use or interpret imagery to solve real problems.
When is an image not just an image?
If you think about the photos you take with a camera, what you see is what you get. A color photo combines red, green and blue reflected light in the same way that our eyes capture reflected light, so it looks like a realistic version of what we would see if …

The ASD FieldSpec 4 Hi-Res NG provides enhanced spectral resolution to support accurate calibration and image classification analysis.
Higher resolution hyperspectral sensors yield greater precision for remote sensing classification applications, producing more information from every pixel generated in an image than ever before. In order to take advantage of the full potential of these sensors, measurements from ground-based instrumentation need to meet or exceed the sensor’s spectral resolution. In the absence of this resolution equality, data are interpolated during post-processing; as a result, vital spectral information can be smoothed and lost.
The enhanced spectral resolution …
