Just when I thought I’d seen everything that could contaminate the background, a user sent me this picture! The Musca Domestica (common housefly) was attracted by certain aromatics used in testing and seems to have entered the measurement cell through an empty Hydro EV over a weekend. Unfortunately, it became wedged within the measurement cell and did not survive the experience.

The most important message from the Mastersizer training courses I give is to make sure you have a good background before you start. Laser diffraction is a background subtracted technique: …

I recently presented a webinar exploring the practical aspects of sieving method – the advantages and disadvantages.  I compared the method to other techniques such as laser diffraction indicating the increased wealth of information that can be obtained with these more modern instrumental techniques and the common pitfalls and assumptions of the screening technique.
More than 800 of you registered for the webinar and I received a large numbers of interesting questions which I have been working steadily through. I thought it would be a good idea to share the questions and answers via the blog, so here they …

The prevalence of chocolate eggs and chocolate bunnies in the supermarkets here in the UK can only signal one thing: Easter is upon us.  With the emergence of daffodils, buds appearing on trees, lambs frolicking in the fields and warmth seeping back into the northern hemisphere, the cold winter months are over.  Of course, it is not just in the western world that the arrival of spring, new life and new beginnings are celebrated.
In Japan, a country I had the pleasure of living in for a year and a half …

The recently announced merger of Malvern Instruments and PANalytical could not be better timed from the Cement industry’s perspective. Both companies are market leaders in their respective technology fields – Malvern in particle characterization and PANalytical in elemental and mineralogical analysis – and both having strong teams of application experts with a lot of experience in cement production and characterization.
The synergy between the teams and product offerings was described in a recent webinar by Harald van Weeren of PANalytical and myself. The live event was attended by over one hundred participants and …

Peeling back the foil on a gold coin. Popping a perforated window on a festive calendar. Pursuing your favourite coloured wrapper around a bowl. The prize inside many little packages we open this season will be chocolate.
The secret of chocolate’s almost universal appeal is in the mouthfeel the “snap” of the first bite, how the chocolate melts and how it coats the inside of the mouth. Despite being a consumer experience, mouthfeel is strongly related to materials science – chocolate being a complex composite material.
Our instruments hold the key to many of …

Additive manufacturing, also commonly referred to as 3D printing is the process of building a three dimensional structure or component from the ground up, usually layer by layer. There are seven main categories of additive manufacturing processes, as defined by the ASTM Committee F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies. These include:

Powder Bed Fusion
Vat Polymerisation (Stereolithography)
Material Extrusion (Fused Deposition Modeling)
Material Jetting
Binder Jetting
Sheet Lamination

Powder bed fusion is an Additive Manufacturing process in which a powder layer is deposited on a building platform and a laser or electron beam used to selectively melt or fuse …

Size distributions are a description of the fact that not every component in the sample has the same size.  There is a range of sizes present, as mathematically described by a distribution.
There are different ways to represent this distribution in terms of:

Intensity – How much light comes from the different components?
Volume or mass – How much volume is present in the different components?
Number – How many particles are present in the different components?

This often causes confusion, and the intensity volume number issue is one of the most popular blogs.
Intuitively most …

Over the past week I’ve had a lot of fun working with Malvern’s team in China to deliver a series of seminars designed to help researchers engaged in pharmaceutical product development. These meetings focused on how Malvern’s material characterization systems can help those developing and manufacturing oral solid dose formulations. During the seminar series, we had the privilege of meeting with well over 200 customers, providing us with the chance to learn about the challenges they are facing in product development, as they seek to select APIs and excipients which …

Analysis of Mushroom Farming – Mushrooms meet Malvern
Malvern Instruments has made its name in particle sizing: the flagships Mastersizer and  Zetasizer have become the de facto global standard tools for particle sizing from nanometers to millimeters.  The breadth of applications for these technologies is simply astounding and we are constantly seeing new uses in diverse areas. As just one example, the video below shows use of a Mastersizer 2000 in a Lingzhi mushroom research facility, where state-of-the-art cultivation techniques are developed and improved.

The Lingzhi mushroom is also known as the reishi mushroom and …

Component-specific Particle Size
Follow that particle!

I’ve always thought it would be great to be the innocent driver in a movie chase scene who has to respond to the hero’s demand to ‘Follow that car’ as they try to keep tabs on the villain. I always imaged that this would unlock the silent racing driver within me, giving me the excuse to forget about speed limits and drive at the limits of my car’s performance. I’d also get the chance to practice my handbrake turns!
Although I have never been engaged in a …

Towards the end of the year, a review of the past seems a fitting blog theme.  For the Zetasizer this is particularly impressive, as we now have over 55,000 citations  for this technology in scientific journals. The next most cited Malvern system is the Mastersizer with over 25,000 publications. Other product lines, such as the Microcal ITC, MicroCal DSC, Viscotek GPC, Bohlin rheometry and Nanosight NTA technologies were cited almost 12k, 8k, 10k, 8k, 2.5k times respectively – bringing us to a total of more than 120,000 citations for Malvern technology.
Why do Malvern systems …

The paranormal has always been a fascinating subject for me. As an amateur paranormal investigator I am often out in alleged haunted locations looking for rational explanations to unusual activity.
Working at Malvern instruments we are fortunate enough to work with instruments and methods that are reliable and repeatable every time but when it comes to paranormal investigations this is often not the case.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not there are certainly a lot of interesting individual theories around ghosts. Theory provides an explanatory framework for observation, and from the …

Hello once again from the Malvern development labs!
You may remember I wrote a blog last year about the Dispersion Index parameter on the Hydro Sight and how it can be used to supplement Mastersizer information on the dispersion state of your sample.  Well, in this blog I’m going to introduce you to another novel feature of the Hydro Sight:  automatic anomaly detection.  (There’s also a little game at the end that you can all play at home – and prizes are at stake….)

This feature is very useful for troubleshooting problems …

How the particle size of coffee can affect the taste and strength of coffee
As a Malvern product manager, I am privileged to get the chance to travel to different locations around the world in order to meet Malvern’s users and engage with our sales teams. As a result, I get to stay in a lot of hotels.
Now, as with other travellers, I have developed my own list of requirements for assessing whether a given hotel is worth visiting again. I don’t know what you …

Background
A large amount of testing is being performed globally to optimize the efficiency of oil/water separators in diesel engines.
The filters remove any solid components (rust, paint chips) that may cause wear on the engine as well as undissolved water (that will be present in the diesel).
Large water droplets are reasonably easy to remove, but increasingly the water droplets are present in the form of a fine emulsion. The recent addition of various fuel additives (especially in low sulphur diesels) act as surfactants and have the unwanted side effect of reducing …

One of the questions I am regularly asked by my Mastersizer customers is how much sample do I need to measure?
I get the feeling people are hoping for a simple answer, such as 1g, 10ml etc. Unfortunately, the science of sampling is not so straightforward…
An expert in sampling, Francis F Pitard, says “a sample is equitable when it is reproducible and accurate enough to satisfy both the supplier and the customer”. I take this to mean the results need to be reproducible AND have RSDs for the percentiles that satisfy …

Regular readers of this blog will know that one of the most important pieces of advice we provide with respect to setting product specifications or developing new methods is that one number is never enough. For example, a single measurement is always perfect and tells you nothing about how a method is performing – it is only by making repeat measurements that the method’s performance can be ascertained. And when it comes to setting specifications, selecting a single number from a Malvern analysis report and using it as a quality …

My name is Thea Miksch and I recently visited Malvern Instruments for a six day work experience placement.  It was quite a big thing for me since I came from Germany to the UK for this placement. I was a little scared that I wouldn’t understand anything about the technology, but the Malvern employees were great at explaining it so even I got it!
One of the many things I learned is that there is science behind everything. I never thought of the particle size of chocolate or the viscosity of …

Batteries, and the chargers for them, are everywhere. They are available in a wide range of specifications using a variety of chemistries. The characteristics of the battery are determined by the particle size of the electrolyte powder, or slurry, and the surface roughness of the electrodes, which is determined by the particle size of its coating. By controlling the surface area, through particle size, a battery can be optimised for high capacity or high power.
The capacity of a battery is the amount of electrical charge it can deliver at the …
