Just when I thought I’d seen everything that could contaminate the background, a user sent me this picture! The Musca Domestica (common housefly) was attracted by certain aromatics used in testing and seems to have entered the measurement cell through an empty Hydro EV over a weekend. Size distributions are a description of the fact that not every component in the sample has the same size.  There is a range of sizes present, as mathematically described by a distribution.
There are different ways to represent this distribution in terms of:

Intensity – How much light comes from the different components?
Volume or mass – How much volume is present in the different components?
Number – How many particles are present in the different components?

Towards the end of the year, a review of the past seems a fitting blog theme.  For the Zetasizer this is particularly impressive, as we now have over 55,000 citations  for this technology in scientific journals. The next most cited Malvern system is the Mastersizer with over 25,000 publications. Other product lines, such as the Microcal ITC, MicroCal DSC, Viscotek GPC, Bohlin rheometry and Nanosight NTA technologies were cited almost 12k, 8k, 10k, 8k, 2.5k times respectively – bringing us to a total of more than 120,000 citations for Malvern technology.

A large amount of testing is being performed globally to optimize the efficiency of oil/water separators in diesel engines.
The filters remove any solid components (rust, paint chips) that may cause wear on the engine as well as undissolved water (that will be present in the diesel).
