I presented a new webinar focusing on “A basic introduction to Electrophoretic Light Scattering (ELS)“. In this presentation, I explained the importance of Zeta potential measurements for colloidal dispersions and how it is determined using ELS.
As you certainly know, Electrophoretic Light Scattering (ELS) is a technique used to measure the electrophoretic mobility of particles or molecules in solution. This measurement is used to determine Zeta potential, which is a measure of the electrostatic or charges repulsion/attraction between particles and is a predictor of emulsion and dispersion stability. Zeta potential is …

This week I’m at Analytica in Munich surrounded by my colleagues from Malvern Panalytical. Even if it took me longer to reach the show because of the airline strikes, I’m happy to be talking to our customers and showing them our new products.
Our recently launched products the Morphologi 4 and the Epsilon 4 are taking pride of place at the front of the stand and there has been a lot of interest in them.
For the Morphologi 4 and 4-ID, I have enjoyed demonstrating it live to attendees at the exhibition. I have met current customers who use …

I am excited that the Sample Assistant autosampler for the NanoSight NS300 was recently launched as we are get increasing numbers of requests for automated NTA analyses. The full launch webinar is available showing the system in operation and the user interfaces.
Having worked with several of the beta test sites, I can see how valuable this accessory will be in the field. Many of our users are testing increasing numbers of samples, some to the point where a person is essentially full time testing samples on the NanoSight system. On one …

It was my great pleasure to present as part of the Worcestershire Innovation Network at their WINN Wednesday event on the 22nd of November, showcasing the best in innovation across Worcestershire.
This included a local company which makes artificial kneecaps and hips, an insight into the building of genomics studies of patients with rare diseases and cancers, an update on the appeal to get a state-of-the-art surgical robot for removal of prostate tumors (reducing discomfort, scarring and hospital stay post-operation). Jess Antley, head of WINN, also gave an update on a new shared space/collaboration …

Results of a multi-round interlaboratory comparison (ILC) of NanoSight instruments were recently published1, setting a benchmark for repeatability and reproducibility for the Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA) technique. The limits of measurement were shown to extend beyond the 30 nm –600 nm range (with all NanoSight models), with percentage coefficients of variation (% CV), calculated as sub 5% for monodisperse samples. The process further highlighted how much variability or error might be introduced if inappropriate instrument settings or analytical procedures are used.
As a relatively new technique, there remained questions about the …

I know this sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but in this case, it was actually the beginning of the 2017 Colorado Protein Stability Conference, held in July at Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, Colorado. In attendance was a range of scientists and researchers from all over the world, with one common subject in mind: Protein Stability.

One of the highlights of this conference was the pre-conference workshop. This was a free workshop for all attendees of the conference, which was sponsored by Malvern Panalytical. The workshop included a range …

I recently presented a webinar titled “Basic Principles of Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis: Size, Concentration and Speciation with Single-Particle Resolution”. We got such a good turnout that we were not able to address the numerous questions asked during the event.
Thank you for the participation!

Since there was such strong interest, we have provided the following list of questions and answers to benefit all who are interested.
Q: In DLS also we can get lognormal number distribution. How is the NTA number distribution different?
NTA yields a number weighted distribution because it is a particle …

Being involved with the NanoSight products gives us visibility over a wide range of research areas that have a direct benefit to science and humanity. It is quite exciting to feel we are contributing to advancing science in these fields.
I was prompted to do a quick review of recent publications to see where NanoSight systems are being used after reading a recent article by Lara Aqrawi on characterizing extracellular vesicles in tears and saliva as a non-invasive diagnostic method for primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) patients. Nanoparticle tracking analysis was conducted …

With Pre-Conference Workshop on Biophysical Characterization and Particle Analysis

Date: July 17th – 20th.
We at Malvern know that protein stability is important in numerous disciplines, ranging from basic and medical biochemistry to pharmaceutical sciences. However, it is rare that researchers from all the relevant areas can join to discuss the critical issues in the field. The 2017 Colorado Protein Stability Conference provides a unique forum for this exchange of information. The topics to be covered include protein folding, dynamics and thermodynamic stability; amyloidosis and protein aggregation; and stability, formulation, analysis and processing …

Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis or Dynamic Light Scattering ?
After a recent joint NanoSight and Zetasizer demonstration, I received this set of questions that helps illustrate the core of the issue of these two techniques:

Since the Nanosight gives me particle concentration, it’s somewhat straightforward to calculate what % of my Nanoparticles are aggregated. Can I calculate % aggregated particles in the DLS as well?  Or does the varying amount of intensity, and the protein+nanoparticle mixture in the sample confound that calculation?

If I wanted to measure non-spherical particles (for example nanorods), which system …

We recently published our application note, “Adeno-Associated Virus titer and aggregation characterization“, which discusses a new NanoSight method that allows the visualization and therefore analysis of viruses smaller than what was previously possible to measure.  This represents an exciting extension of the Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA) technique in response to market demand for tools for better characterization of small virus types.

Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) is commonly used in the gene therapy field as a delivery vector. Tools to characterize both the concentration and purity or aggregation of the samples are limited because the primary virus size is …
