At Malvern, the launch of a new product is always an exciting time.  With our stated goals of growing into the biopharmaceutical market to satisfy their development needs, the launch of a product to help us achieve this goal is particularly so.

That’s why we’re so excited about the upcoming launch of Archimedes.  Archimedes is a novel system that can count particles in the size range of 50 nm to 5 µm using the technology of Resonant Mass Measurement (RMM).  RMM delivers true size distributions based on the buoyant mass of particles passing through a resonating flow path.  As well as mass and size distributions, the system can also distinguish different types of particles such as protein aggregates and silicone oil droplets.  This makes it especially well suited to the characterization of biopharmaceuticals in final formulations which can contain both of these in varying quantities.

The Archimedes will be well placed alongside our other protein characterization systems.  Within biopharmaceuticals and the characterization of proteins, the Zetasizer systems use Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) to measure protein hydrodynamic size.  This can be used to monitor protein behavior over time and in response to temperature and can see the earliest stages of protein aggregation.  The Viscotek Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) products can measure protein oligomer and aggregate molecular weight and accurately quantify their levels.  However, as the sizes of aggregates increase and their numbers decrease, both DLS and SEC reach their practical limitations.

That’s where Archimedes comes in.  By quantifying aggregates at sizes where other techniques struggle, Archimedes fills a real gap in the measurement of protein aggregates and adds to our ability to help biopharmaceutical development and formulation.
