On October 2, 2018, we held a seminar entitled “Overcoming Characterization Challenges in Drug Formulation” in the Boston area.  It was a great opportunity to meet with many pharmaceutical scientists in the area and learn about their challenges and concerns.  The presentations addressed a number of topics of interest, from stability of formulations, trace phase and impurity detection, deformulation, root cause analysis, to optimizing small molecule candidate screening.  There were great questions from the audience, so we rounded up several questions and answers here to share.
How does the Mastersizer 3000 see …

In this blog post, we look at the history of the software ‘bug’ and explain how not everything that appears to be a software issue is caused by the software itself. With this in mind, we examine how the new design of the Morphologi 4 and Morphologi 4-ID  has helped reduce the risk of environmental issues causing problems which may previously have been mistaken for bugs in the software.
The term ‘bug’ was used as far back as the 1870s to describe errors or glitches in a system. Early adopters of the …

Celebrating the valuable contributions female members of the team have made to the development of the Morphologi 4 and Morphologi 4-ID
June 23rd, 2018 was International Women in Engineering Day. The purpose of this event was to demonstrate to young women who are currently in school or college deciding which career path to pursue, that engineering, science and technology-related careers are open to women as well as to men.

Throughout my career, I’ve been aware of a definite gender imbalance in science-, engineering-, and technology-related industries. At college, I was the only …

I am absolutely delighted to find myself back in France, launching the NEW Morphologi 4 platform at Forum Labo, Lyon. It is the first opportunity I have had to see the instrument at an exhibition since its launch in February. The exhibition is a highlight of the year for anyone working in laboratories so it is an ideal stage for us to demonstrate how the Morphologi 4 platform complements other laboratory equipment. Morphological imaging and Morphologically-Directed Raman Spectroscopy MDRS® techniques are fast becoming an essential part of the particle characterization toolkit, …

東京へ ようこそ!  Welcome to Tokyo!  I’m very excited to return to Japan with the launch of the new Morphologi 4 range here at Tokyo Big Sight.  We’re at Nanotech 2018, and the additive manufacturing technology exhibition running concurrently – but more on that later.
My return to Japan with the Morphologi 4 also marks the completion of a personal journey, which started almost three years ago when I seconded to our Tokyo office to learn more about the customer applications of the previous Morphologi platform, the G3. (In fact, if you tune in to …

As I find myself surrounded by snow in Paris – the city of love – I’ve received news from my colleague, Sarennah Longworth-Cook, who has just been measuring chocolate on the new Morphologi 4 using the new Sharp Edge measurement mode.  How apt, since we’ll be launching the new Morphologi 4 range on Valentine’s Day!
So, what can Morphologi 4 tell us about our delicious chocolatey treats?

I know we don’t all think about this sort of thing whilst we’re enjoying eating it, but the way that chocolate feels and melts in …

A week today, we will be excitedly preparing for the launch of the brand new Morphologi® 4 and Morphologi 4-ID! As we approach the next exciting chapter in Morphologi’s evolution, I’ve been looking back at just how far this instrument has come over the years.
Malvern Panalytical’s first foray into static morphological imaging was our acquisition of the Pharma Vision 830 in late 2003.  This system worked by using a linear actuator to automatically move the camera across the sample tray as it took digitized video images. At the time, it …

I have just come back from presenting my talk ‘Application of Morphologically-Directed Raman Spectroscopy in deformulation and in vitro bioequivalence studies’ at the pharma focus session of Powtech 2017.
The talk indicated how there are still many drug products that have come of patent but do not yet have generic equivalents available and how there is a drive from the regulatory bodies to make health care more accessible and so they are producing many guidance documents to help address this.
I gave an overview of a proposed workflow for developing generic drug …

I know this sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but in this case, it was actually the beginning of the 2017 Colorado Protein Stability Conference, held in July at Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, Colorado. In attendance was a range of scientists and researchers from all over the world, with one common subject in mind: Protein Stability.

One of the highlights of this conference was the pre-conference workshop. This was a free workshop for all attendees of the conference, which was sponsored by Malvern Panalytical. The workshop included a range …

Standing at just under 3800 m tall with its distinctive symmetrical cone-shaped peak, the majestic Mount Fuji, or Fujisan (富士山) as it is known locally, is one of the most iconic symbols of Japan.
Therefore, it seemed only appropriate that whilst on secondment in Malvern’s Tokyo application lab, I should attempt to reach the summit of this famous volcano and, in something of a cliché, watch the sunrise from the highest peak in the Land of the Rising Sun.
There is only a short window each year in which one is permitted …

Why is it that structures built in Roman times have resisted the elements for thousands of years when more modern structures have suffered?
This was a question posed in a recent BBC news story ‘Scientists explain ancient Rome’s long-lasting concrete’ that caught my eye since we have pondered the question here at Malvern before as you can see in this application note “Component Characterization of Cements” where the Morphologi G3-ID was used to study and compare the composition of different cements.

How is the concrete made?
Ancient structures are built using concrete made from …

With Pre-Conference Workshop on Biophysical Characterization and Particle Analysis

Date: July 17th – 20th.
We at Malvern know that protein stability is important in numerous disciplines, ranging from basic and medical biochemistry to pharmaceutical sciences. However, it is rare that researchers from all the relevant areas can join to discuss the critical issues in the field. The 2017 Colorado Protein Stability Conference provides a unique forum for this exchange of information. The topics to be covered include protein folding, dynamics and thermodynamic stability; amyloidosis and protein aggregation; and stability, formulation, analysis and processing …

Over the past week I’ve had a lot of fun working with Malvern’s team in China to deliver a series of seminars designed to help researchers engaged in pharmaceutical product development. These meetings focused on how Malvern’s material characterization systems can help those developing and manufacturing oral solid dose formulations. During the seminar series, we had the privilege of meeting with well over 200 customers, providing us with the chance to learn about the challenges they are facing in product development, as they seek to select APIs and excipients which …

Component-specific Particle Size
Follow that particle!

I’ve always thought it would be great to be the innocent driver in a movie chase scene who has to respond to the hero’s demand to ‘Follow that car’ as they try to keep tabs on the villain. I always imaged that this would unlock the silent racing driver within me, giving me the excuse to forget about speed limits and drive at the limits of my car’s performance. I’d also get the chance to practice my handbrake turns!
Although I have never been engaged in a …

MDRS Technology
Finally!  After what has felt like one of the wettest and longest winters in memory here in the UK, we’re now heading into the long, mellow days of midsummer.
But casting its miserable shadow over the barbecues, school holidays and paddling pools is the dreaded allergy season.  As one of the downsides of life in our “green and pleasant land”, during June we are hit hard by the combined impact of pollen from trees, grasses and weeds.
Many of us are now taking a daily antihistamine of some sort, and others …
