Rheometry

Rheometry refers to the experimental technique used to determine the rheological properties of materials; rheology being defined as the study of the flow and deformation of matter which describes the interrelation between force, deformation and time. The term rheology originates from the Greek words ‘rheo’ translating as ‘flow’ and ‘logia’ meaning ‘the study of’, although as from the definition above, rheology is as much about the deformation of solid-like materials as it is about the flow of liquid-like materials and in particular deals with the behavior of complex viscoelastic materials that show properties of both solids and liquids in response to force, deformation and time.

The most common approach for measuring time-dependent viscoelastic properties of a material on a rotational rheometer is to perform small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) over a range of oscillation frequencies – commonly referred to as a frequency sweep – where the sample is oscillated back and forth with a given stress or strain. Here the oscillation frequency, measured in rad/s, is equivalent to 1/t, with t the deformation time of the material.

Here at Malvern Panalytical, we seem to enjoy testing the rheological properties of drinks, particularly those of the alcoholic variety! John Duffy and Steve Carrington looked into the differences between traditional ales and they explored the properties of Guinness. Any excuse to go down the pub…!

Lors du 52ème Congrès du Groupe Français de Rhéologie (GFR), Guillaume Ovarlez (Directeur de recherche au CNRS, Laboratoire du Futur CNRS-Solvay, Pessac, France) a reçu le prix Maurice Couette et présenté ses travaux sur les inhomogénéités dans les écoulements de suspensions concentrées pour lesquels des rhéomètres de la gamme Kinexus ont été utilisés.

It was my great pleasure to present as part of the Worcestershire Innovation Network at their WINN Wednesday event on the 22nd of November, showcasing the best in innovation across Worcestershire.
This included a local company which makes artificial kneecaps and hips, an insight into the building of genomics studies of patients with rare diseases and cancers, an update on the appeal to get a state-of-the-art surgical robot for removal of prostate tumors (reducing discomfort, scarring and hospital stay post-operation). Last year I went on a rheology tour!! I gave 12 talks in 10 days in 7 locations around Australia and New Zealand, talking primarily about suspension rheology and how particle characteristics such as particle size and shape affect rheology.
I spoke about the stability of suspensions and the factor to consider when assessing suspension stability but another major focus was the viscoelastic properties of materials.

This week is the Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC) held in beautiful Copenhagen. It has been a great conference so far with the opening reception at the City Hall – what an impressive building.

Last week my kids got very frustrated with warm French toast and a new brand of chocolate spread. The French toast, was …of course…warm, and the chocolate was misbehaving: melting and dripping on their fingers …

A rotational rheometer is required to enable a complete understanding of material flow and deformation behaviour for complex viscoelastic materials – from low viscosity polymer and surfactant solutions, through to suspensions and emulsions and high particle-loaded semi-solids such as pastes, and high viscosity polymer melts.
